Workshop on climate technology within the agricultural sector
Organized by the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and the Remission Center for Sustainable Development, a working meeting was held on 28 March 2022 at the Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel. The event was created in order to discuss the needs of climate technology in the agricultural sector.
The meeting was held within the framework of the Climate Technology Needs Assessment of Georgia and the Roadmap for the Preparation, the Distribution of Priority Technologies, and TNA, as sponsored by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The project aims to support the implementation of Georgia’s long-term sustainable development goals and commitments, to encourage green business growth, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and to strengthen economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
The project developed four workshops to discuss climate technology needs across four key sectors, as selected by experts using a multi-criteria analysis method. These meetings, held between 28-31 March, included stakeholders from each of the sectors (agriculture, buildings, transport, and energy).
At the meeting on climate change in the agricultural sector that took place on 28 March, the Remission project representative, Anuki Tkeshelashvili, reviewed the goals of the project, the planned activities, and thereafter considered the predicted results.
Remission also proffered a presentation on the Green Climate Fund, in which they discussed the main evaluation criteria developed for GFC projects, their financial mechanisms, and business models, as well as examples of projects approved by the Fund in the agricultural sector, alongside their risk assessment.
The Remission expert on the agricultural sector, Medea Inashvili, introduced climate technology needs for the agricultural sector. She then meticulously covered the key features of the agricultural sector in relation to climate change. Finally, she stressed the sector’s need to adjust to climate change and she also reviewed climate technologies for the use of both emission reduction and adaptation.
Following the meeting, the stakeholders (representatives of ministries, various governmental agencies, farmers' associations, NGOs, banks and foundations) carried out group work to identify the climate technologies needed in the agricultural sector, to eliminate the barriers they face, and to review the selection criteria for technology. As a result of the meeting, a preliminary list of climate technologies was created, which will be discussed in detail and evaluated via a multi-criteria analysis at the next stage.
